Auto tracing

Automatic container tracking for drayage carriers

Every container traced around the clock, straight from the terminals. Availability, holds, last free day and gate moves show up on the shipment, with alerts before money is lost.

Stop checking terminal websites box by box

Tracing is the job nobody has time for. Someone opens each terminal's website, types in container numbers, and copies the status into a spreadsheet or the TMS. By the time the sheet is done, some of it is already out of date. Boxes get missed. A last free day passes. Storage starts.

DrayTech traces for you. Each container on an open shipment is checked against its terminal, and the results are written to the shipment automatically.

What DrayTech tracks

  • Vessel status: on vessel or discharged
  • Availability: whether the box can be pulled now
  • Holds: customs, line and terminal holds
  • Last free day: the line's last free day for the container
  • Yard and gate moves: gate-out, delivered and empty gate-in
  • Chassis: the chassis number captured from the gate record where the terminal provides it

At Port Houston, every box is checked every few minutes. In Oakland, DrayTech traces boxes at OICT, TraPac and Everport.

Status you can trust

Bad tracing data is worse than none. DrayTech follows simple rules so dispatch can rely on what it sees:

  • A box on hold stays not available until the hold clears, even if another source says otherwise.
  • A box sitting in a closed area of the yard is not marked available until it moves to an open block.
  • The last free day shown is the line's last free day. If it is not known, the field stays blank instead of guessing.
  • Legs close when the gate record or GPS proves the move happened, not on a hunch.

Alerts before money is lost

Tracing is only useful if someone acts on it. DrayTech puts the risk in front of your team:

  • Board filters for last free day, holds and empties
  • Heads-up when a box hits its last free day tomorrow and is not yet dispatched
  • Notice when a hold is released and the box becomes available
  • Daily last free day and open-item reports, emailed by site

Tracking that drives the rest of the system

Because tracing writes to the shipment, the rest of DrayTech uses it. A gate pass is booked when the box is ready, not before. See terminal appointments. Holds and fees are flagged before a driver is sent. See holds and terminal fees. When the empty is back in the gate, the leg closes and the shipment is ready to bill.

GPS fills in the rest

Terminals tell you what happens inside the gate. GPS tells you what happens outside it. DrayTech uses Samsara GPS, or the driver's phone GPS when there is no truck tracker, to stamp arrive and depart times at the customer. Those times become a GPS report you can attach to a detention bill.

Ask in plain English

You can ask DrayTech questions like "Which boxes hit last free day tomorrow?" and get answers from live data. No report builder, no export.

Where it works

Live tracing runs at Port Houston (Bayport and Barbours Cut) and at the Port of Oakland. For Los Angeles and Long Beach, ask us in a demo which terminals are connected today.

Frequently asked questions

How often are containers traced?

At Port Houston, every box on an open shipment is checked every few minutes. Status changes are written to the shipment automatically.

Which last free day does DrayTech show?

The line's last free day. If DrayTech does not have it, the field stays blank rather than showing a guess.

Does DrayTech track vessel status?

Yes. Each box shows whether it is still on the vessel or has been discharged, along with availability and holds.

Can I get alerts when a hold is released?

Yes. DrayTech watches held boxes and alerts your team when a hold clears and the box becomes available.
